I have a new Windows 7 desktop and hoped to replace an aging Windows-based PDA with something newer and more reliable. I need a calendar, task list, and contact list, and need to keep them synced to my PC. I figure the music and video would be a nice bonus.

As it turned out, the iPod really didn't play well with Windows 7, and I discovered I needed WiFi connectivity (not broadband...WiFi) to fully use all the features. I assumed I could transfer information using the USB connection; that is not true. I wish I had known that the only way to transfer info was via WiFi; I never would've thought of buying this device.

My problems began with installation . It would only recognize the Apple touch iPod less than half the time after it was plugged in; required reinstallation of iTunes, multiple driver removal and reinstallation, and process shutdowns to make it work. Quite a headache. Google "Error 0xE8000065" and you'll see a number of Windows 7 users with similar problems to mine, all unresolved. Keep in mind I have a Windows 7 machine that's less than 2 weeks old, so it's not full of garbage and conflicting software. I expected iTunes to recognize the iPod every time I plugged in; this was not the case. Most of the time, I got a "could not connect" error.

The Apple touch iPod synced calendar and contacts OK, but requires a 3rd party app to sync tasks. Not too big a deal; I'd pay a couple of bucks for that.

The biggest issue, and one I wish had been clearly publicized, is that it requires WiFi for full use. Specifically, WiFi is the only way to get info other than the stuff on iTunes into your iPod. So if you have an app that requires info from the Internet (like Metro, a subway routing app), you must have a WiFi connection. You can't update apps without a WiFi connection. You can't sync info with Web0-based apps without WiFi...it **does not** sync to the Web while in the cradle.

To be crystal clear:
**You cannot use the USB port to transfer info to the iPod.**

This is substantially different from Windows-based PDA's that communicate with the `net while plugged into the USB port, and also have WiFi functionality for Web-browsing. I could keep apps up to date at home via the USB conncetion, and when traveling, if WiFi was available, it was a nice-to-have. If you don't have WiFi (not just broadband...WiFi) where you plan to use this, or frequent access to WiFi, then don't bother buying this.

Also, the USB connector was flimsy; I could see it breaking after 6 months of use.
I never used the headphones; can't comment.

What's good:
-Device software seemed good, no shutdowns or resets.
-Music and video played well
-Lots of memory
-Decent selection of apps, but mostly paid...free apps weren't so hot.
-Very slim and nicely designed.
What's bad:
-Doesn't play well with Windows 7; multiple sync errors and "cannot connect" errors.
-Needs WiFi to update apps, use built-in map, stock, and weather features, and sync with Web-based software (like tasks on Toodle Do, for example).
Bottom line: I hoped this would be my new PDA, but it isn't appropriate for business use unless you have WiFi access, and unless you're not using a Windows 7 machine.
