DIY-Spy, homebrew 2.4GHz wi-fi spectrum analyzer

DIY-Spy is an implementation of a 2.4GHz ISM spectrum analyzer that runs on the Texas Instruments eZ430-RF2500 development kit (USB stick). The radio frontend inside (TI/Chipcon CC2500) is the exact same .00 radio frontend that powers a well-known (and 0!) commercial WiFi spectrum analyzer dongle. The "spectrum analyzer" function is basically performed by taking this (or any other) 2.4GHz radio chip, looping through all the channels and reading out the RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indication) register. On the CC2500 radio such channel changes can be performed extremely quickly, allowing a near-realtime sampling of nearby RF interference across the 2.4-2.5GHz ISM band. For the eZ430 developer stick, the screen update rate is limited by the 9600-baud data rate of the virtual serial port. In this video, you can see a large peak from the carrier wave output of a nearby nRF24L01 radio that moves as I change channels, and the periodic interference from my WiFi access point.

Question by tduarte108@sbcglobal.net: How to stop cordless phone from interrupting wifi?
I did this about a year ago by going on the modems site and changing something but I had to reset my modem and I've forgotten how to do it. I have AT&T DSL which came with a 2WIRE wifi router/dsl modem. The phone is a standard cordless 2.4GHz phone.

  1. @rfengr You were not reading :-) The receiver is a TI CC2500 radio, which does have RSSI readout. The nRF25L01 was used as a signal source to test it.

  2. nRF24L01 does not have RSSI (receive signal strength). How did you get different raw carrier amplitudes ?
