Does the nintendo wifi usb adapter work without a router?
I do not have a router and do not plan on getting one. I still want wifi in my home. If I get a wifi usb adapter on Ebay and it works, would that be all I need, or do I need a router too?

No – you’ll need a source for the WIFI signal that the adapter will connect to. If you do not have a WIFI access point of some type, then you would be stealing someone else’s connection.

Joihntrot is exactly right. Whilst any almost any dongle (With its associated MAC code) can be used on a Wii (No need to use a Nintendo dongle- save money!), you still need a device (or Router) to get actual data to and from the external Server (ISP) to the Wii.
My young lad set his Wii up with a new non-Nintendo Dongle, then unplugged the Dongle and presto, the Wii still works to the router useing that Dongles MAC code.!
