One consumer access point doesn't have that kind of range. IF you are going to be using consumer electronics, you're going to need multiple access points. The only other way is to have a really strong access point built and really strong wifi cards for all computers within a 1km radius.

If you buy an unlocked mifi (Novatel wireless) it will take any sim. Pay as you go or contract data. I use a contract dat sim from a dongle.

Combined with a little solar panel it has become a constant companion in my tech bag. I am sure there will be cheaper options out soon.

That is true, but unless you need it on a daily basis it really isn’t worth £200 what it is.

I used to do the same but it means you can’t use your phone as a phone.. and the battery only lasts half an hour on the iPhone.. and the data rate is nowhere near as fast and what you can get on the MiFi.

I find it just as easy to setup an adhoc network between my mac and my iphone to use my iPhones connection as a router when our internet goes down.
