basically if you gotta ask the question then you dont' need it.
why do no need a wireless telephone? or a wireless remote to you tv?
answer those questions and you'll see why some need wireless networking - yes, networking, not just wireless internet access.

Your ISP likely provided you with a modem of some sort, either a DSL or a cable modem, that device alone can prove internet to one PC. (sometimes the modem may have built in router capabilitys and provide access to mroe then one PC)
For you to rout internet to mroe then one device, or for your to run your own home network you need a hub, or router, , the later being easiest, the diffrence in wireless and wired, is simply the means in which the devices all comunicate.
in short, you do not need a router. but in the end its best to have one.
Also there may be some ISPs that do require the use of a router. i do not know for certain but the possibility exists.

If you only have one computer you don’t need a router. However, it is an added layer of security.

Most people need the Internet in order to serve a purpose. You can use wifi for more than just the Internet. You can also use it to gain access to shared files and printers on other computers and servers.
Like I always say though, before going wireless, decide whether this device is roaming or stationary. Just because it is in a different room or on a different floor does not mean wireless is the only option.
